Before you start animating, we recommend to study references. For example, you can watch videos with people performing the motion you want to animate. This helps to get a better understanding of the movement as a whole, and its elements.
Once you have an idea of how the motion should look and what poses make it up, it is time to create a rough draft of your animation. This can be done by defining several key poses at the crucial points of the motion
How to Set Up an Animated Reference
Add Reference Plane
1. Select Add Plane from the Objects menu to add a plane to the scene.
2. Switch to the Joint Mode
3. Select the joint at the center of the plane.
4. Use Manipulators to adjust the size and position of the plane.
Usually, we want a reference plane to be placed behind the character.
A background object is always displayed behind other objects. This is not necessary, but it can be convenient for using references.
5. Switch to the Mesh Mode.
6. Select the plane.
7. Open the Mesh object tab on the Object properties panel.
8. Enable the Background option.
This way, our reference plane will always be displayed behind the character models.
For working with references, we recommend switching to Isometric projection. This is done by left-clicking the View Cube.
Now we need to add a video to the plane.
Cascadeur doesn’t currently support video textures, so we’ll need to save the video as an image sequence. This can be done in any video editing software.
A resulting sequence should look like this:
To add this sequence to the plane:
1. Switch to the Mesh Mode:
2. Select the plane
3. Click the Bind Texture button
4. Select every file of the image sequence
5. Now, the sequence should be applied to the plane. One file in the sequence equals to one frame of animation
Prepare the Reference for Animation
By default, textures are not visible in the Point Controller mode. To fix this:
1. Switch to the Point Controller mode
2. Open Visible menu
3. Enable Textures
You can also set the frame from which animated reference should start:
1. Switch to the Mesh Mode
2. Select the reference plane
3. In the Outliner, set the Start frame
Now, the animation will start playing at the frame you’ve set.
