Indie Spotlight: The Story of Papillon Games and Astrocuco

The Birth of Papillon Games

Ever since the arcade games of the 80s captured my imagination, I knew my passion lay in game development. My name is John Caicedo, and I come from Bogota. Over the years, I have faced numerous challenges, from lacking resources to the necessity of self-learning. Yet, each obstacle only strengthened my determination. In this journey, I discovered a tool that transformed my development process: Cascadeur.

Papillon Games, inspired by the butterfly symbolizing transformation and hope, emerged from my extensive experiences and learning. The butterfly also honors my beloved daughter, Daniela, whose courage in her battle against leukemia inspires me every day. Thus, Astrocuco was born, a game reflecting her bravery and determination.

Astrocuco: A Metaphor of Survival

Astrocuco is more than a game; it's an emotional experience immersing players in the survival of an explorer on Mars. Players must gather resources, manage their oxygen and energy, and face solar storms and other challenges in a hostile environment. The gameplay mechanics, centered on solving puzzles and overcoming obstacles, are designed to reflect the daily struggle of those facing extreme adversities.
On our exciting journey developing Astrocuco, our Mars adventure at Papillon Games, we found ourselves needing to create realistic and fluid animations. However, like many indie developers, our animation skills are limited. Fortunately, Cascadeur presents itself as a revolutionary solution that allows us to overcome these limitations and take our animations to the next level of professionalism.
Cascadeur stands out for its approach to making 3D animation accessible to both beginners and experts. This software offers an intuitive interface that eliminates the complexity of manually moving controllers. Instead, it uses advanced technologies such as AutoPosing, Physics Simulation, and Artificial Intelligence to facilitate the creation of realistic animations.

AutoPosing: Simplifying the Animation Process

Cascadeur's AutoPosing is an innovative tool that allows users to generate natural poses for their characters with just a few clicks. This feature uses AI to analyze the current pose of the character and suggest adjustments to enhance its realism. This is a great relief for us as it saves us the tedious task of manually adjusting each movement and allows us to focus on the creativity and narrative of our game.
One of Cascadeur's most impressive features is its ability to simulate realistic physics, called AutoPhysics. This feature allows character movements to respond to the laws of physics, creating animations that look and feel authentic. Physics simulation is particularly useful for action and combat animations, where realism is crucial for player immersion. This is especially beneficial for our Astrocuco project, where the low-gravity conditions on Mars can be realistically simulated without additional effort.

Enhanced Productivity for Developers with Limited Skills

Artificial Intelligence in Cascadeur not only powers AutoPosing but also facilitates other animation tasks. For instance, AI can help automatically adjust the timing of animations, ensuring that movements are smooth and consistent. This significantly boosts our productivity as it allows us to create complex animations in a fraction of the time it would normally take using traditional methods.
For developers with limited animation skills, Cascadeur is an invaluable tool. It provides a platform that not only simplifies the animation process but also educates us along the way. With its focus on realistic physics and the simulation of natural movements, Cascadeur allows us to create animations that look and feel authentic without requiring deep technical knowledge. This is a game-changer for us as we can achieve a high level of quality in our animations without needing to hire specialized animators.

Before discovering Cascadeur, animation was one of the biggest challenges in developing Astrocuco. Creating realistic animations requires time, skill, and deep technical knowledge. Although we had some experience with tools like Blender, producing smooth and realistic animations remained a monumental challenge.

This is where Cascadeur changed the game. This tool is not only intuitive and easy to use but also significantly reduces the learning curve. Instead of spending years perfecting animation skills, Cascadeur allows developers to create impressive animations with simple parameters. This has enabled even small studios like ours to compete with industry giants in terms of visual quality.

A concrete example of how Cascadeur improved Astrocuco is in the combat and jump poses of our main character. With Cascadeur, we achieved an incredibly realistic combat alert pose that adds a layer of immersion to the game that previously seemed unattainable.

The Road Ahead

Astrocuco is projected for release on platforms like Windows and Android in the first half of 2025. We are excited to share our progress through our devlog on Itch.io and our YouTube channel . We hope to launch the game on stores like Steam in the near future.

Cascadeur is a transformative tool for game development, especially for small teams and indie developers with limited animation skills. At Papillon Games, we are excited to integrate this powerful technology into the development of Astrocuco. With Cascadeur, we can achieve a level of professionalism and realism in our animations that seemed unattainable before. This tool not only improves our productivity but also enables us to fulfill our creative vision more effectively and efficiently.

The journey of Papillon Games and the development of Astrocuco has been an emotional rollercoaster of learning and growth. With the help of tools like Cascadeur, we have overcome obstacles that once seemed insurmountable. This adventure proves that with passion and the right tools, any dream can become a reality.

Papillon Games continues forward, driven by the love and memory of Daniela, turning each challenge into an opportunity and every fall into a push toward new horizons.
